General information
A power cord is a flexible electrical cable fitted with a power plug, allowing for the connection of domestic appliances and IT equipment like PCs, computer screens, laptops or UPSs to a single-phase AC power source, either through a wall socket or via an extension cord.
Different designs of plugs exist worldwide. Some plugs, like the British Standard BS1363 and the EU standard CEE7/7 Schuko or the Swiss SEV 1011 male plugs have a ground connection pin (earthing).
Power cords are fitted with a female connector at the appliance end. Various types of connectors exist depending on the appliance they will power. Among the most common connectors there is the C5 (also called “Mickey Mouse”), the C7 (also called “Figure 8” because it resembles a lying 8) and the C13 connector, commonly used in computer screen or UPS power cords.
Power cords and plugs have a rated voltage (typically 110 – 250 VAC) and a rated current (A) which limit the load that can safely be supplied by the power cord.
