Stage micrometers are normally mounted on standard size slides. When the reticle image is on the glass surface, this micrometer can be brought into direct contact with the specimen mounted thereon for measurement. It is rarely practical or economical, however, to mount specimen and scale together. For this reason, most measurements in microscopy are made by means of an eyepiece reticle, and the function of the calibration scale is to calibrate the system. The stage micrometer is protected by a coverglass which also duplicates the specimen»s optical conditions. The 1mm stage micrometer is also available without coverglass, for use with reflected light, as is commonly used in the material sciences.
