A useful tool for multi grid staining. You may say goodbye to precipitation and dust if the directions are carefully followed. The Grid Stick is comprised of a thin yet robust alloy that will not react with common organic solvents or stains. The stick itself is 4 mm wide and 75 mm long, with a groove in the centre and small undercut notches on one side to allow easy grid removal. Each stick has a little spot on the top for identification.
The Grid Stick is treated with a pressure-sensitive adhesive that has been precisely designed. This adhesive is resistant to common staining solvents (e.g., water, alcohol, ethanol) and effectively keeps the grids in place during staining, emulsion coating, carbon coating, shadow casting, serial section collecting, and so on, but will not remain on the grid once removed from the stick. The grids are held in the same plane as the solution flow throughout staining process, reducing the danger of disrupting the formvar layer and/or accumulating surface debris.
Grids can be stored, handled, and viewed with little difficulty. For instance, if your grids are on SynapTek Grid Sticks, you can easily place the stick on the stage of a phase microscope, identify the material (you will see outlines of large cells), and determine its condition (i.e., holes in material, dirt on grids) in a matter of seconds without disturbing a single grid.
