Designed for use with furnaces and induction heating systems, these extensometers use Epsilon’s exclusive self-supporting design. Epsilon has developed these unique extensometers for high temperature testing of metals, ceramics and composites produced by furnaces and induction heating systems. The combination of features makes these extensometers easier to use and more efficient than other similar high temperature extensometers. The blocks are held on the sample by light, flexible ceramic fiber cords. They make the extensometer self-supporting on the specimen. No additional fasteners are required. Additional stress on the test specimen is greatly reduced due to the self-supporting design and light weight of the sensor. The 3448 extensometer will fit most furnaces with an extensometer port. Due to the location of the ceramic cord, the extensometer is suitable for use in induction heating systems. The combination of reflective heat shields and convective cooling fins allows this model to be used in temperatures up to 1200°C (2200°F) without any cooling. For stabilization at high temperatures, an additional tiny fan is used. The fan comes with a magnetic base for support, so it can be mounted anywhere near the extensometer.
